The Sandy Hook shooting is still fresh in my mind. As a parent I
cannot begin to image the unspeakable horror that happened last Friday.
Here is the deal. The media and government has made this another
argument for gun control. The media has called the AR an assault
rifle. If it is an assault rifle then my 60 year old Stevens model 87
must be one too. It holds 10 or 12 rounds in the tube. You have seen
the news; "the same gun used by the army". The argument here is not
whether it is an assault rifle or large capacity magazines the
argument is gun control.
Look, obama got re-elected on a platform of taxing the rich. So, how
hard will it be for the government to pass some kind of restrictive
gun legislation? The media is having a field day with this.
Looking at what we know about Sandy Hook, Lanza didn't own guns, he
didn't buy them at a gun show so tightening up "loop holes" wouldn't
have mattered in his case. However, the media paints all of us with
the same brush.
Would you agree gun violence is a problem in America? What is the
answer here? Some say ban all guns. Hasn't that horse left the
barn? Aren't there about 100 million guns owned in the US? If my
internet data is correct, 38 children have been killed in school
shootings in the last decade. On average that is 4 per year. There
are 50 million children in the public school system. So, that is 1 in
12 million. I'm guessing more kids are killed riding bikes or
traveling with parents in auto accidents. Kids are safer in school
than they ever have.
However, when you have lots of kids like Sandy Hook or the
Pennsylvania amish school shooting several years ago it is truly
awful. Somehow we, society, needs to figure out how to identify these
idiot knuckleheads that have a hard time being good citizens to get
help or put them somewhere they can't hurt others.
Here is where my head is: we are one supreme court justice away from
losing our gun rights in one form or another. We, you and me, have to
be part of the solution. We know Freedom is not Free. We know,
Freedom of Speech does not mean you can say just anything. We must be
accountable for maintaining our liberties. All of them. Owning a gun
is a huge responsibility.
I am asking you for feedback. How can we enter into a dialogue to
stop this craziness. I have been a member of the NRA a long time.
All I get from those guys is requests for money. Granted they have
helped with influencing legislation. Where are they when it comes to
solving the problem? Absent our engaging in solution making, we will
loose our gun rights. If we re-elected a president on taxing the
rich, how hard will it be for the government, media and the 49% of
"Takers" to legislate our gun rights?
If we are not proactive in participating in the solution, offering
ideas, showing some initiative, anything, we will lose.
Let us hear from you, your ideas how we might help the government,
supreme court, media and the country know we are responsible citizens
and understand we must demonstrate owning a gun is not a bad thing.
We must show we are responsible. We must defend our 2nd amendment.
We can't sit back and do nothing.

The arents of children who truly want to keep them safe need to be educated about the success Israel has had in preventing school shootings. The Arabs, back in the 60's and early 70's committed several school shootings. In response, Israel began arming their teachers and school staff, plus having volunteer grandparents and others patrol with guns.
ReplyDeleteIn spite of the fact that the muslims _love_ to kill Israeli children (Fogel family massacre in Mar 2011) and other children elsewhere, as in France in Mar 2012, there have been NO school shootings in Israel since 1974. As much as those sick bastards love to kill innocent - and unarmed - Jews, the cowards stay away from the schools.
There have been a number of attempted massacres at schools and churches here in America (gun free zones, don't you know) that have been stopped by someone who _did_ have a gun, or ran and got one from their vehicle.
Parents need to be made aware of this, while being reminded that even in England and Ireland where handguns have been outlawed for years, they proliferate, and are present in higher numbers than before.
Parents who truly love their children and want them safe need to know these facts. I can see no other way of changing their minds.
Now, let's get something cleared up here: the NRA is not your friend. They have been instrumental in helping to write _all_ of the worst gun control legislation written, including the Gun Control Act of '68 and the Lautenberg Amendment - where people's rights are removed _after the fact_, retroactively, if you were found guilty of any form of domestic violence even if it occurred thirty years ago when you were in your late teens (that'd be 45 years for me ;-)
They often take credit for legislation written, supported, and pushed through by others, like the Second Amendment Foundation and GOA. Ditto on the court cases won, like in DC and Chicago.
And read this article at WRSA:

The NRA loves to collect dues and donations. They then provide some of those funds to people like Harry Reid and others who would love to disarm you. Think for just a moment - if they are successful at supporting our rights, they end up out of a job. If our rights aren't threatened every other day, gun owners would stop sending in those donations. They _have_ to play both sides, or they lose the money, the perks, and the enjoyment of being "power brokers" in DC.
Figure it out, people. I was a member for over twenty years before I wised up, back when they helped write the Lautenberg Amendment, and never told us members until it was to late to do anything about it. They never got another dime out of me. Although I _did_ send them a bunch of pennies - taped inside their postage-paid envelopes until they stopped sending them to me ;-)
RegT, the NRA really has become nothing more than professional fund raisers. They used to be about a lot of things related to shooting sports, like training and education. Not so much anymore. It's too bad.
DeleteWe never want to learn from people who have already paid the price. We insist on allowing the tsa to molest us when Irael has a much better system for keeping terrorists off of their planes. And we refuse to see that the solution to wackos with guns is superior training and firepower. Israel learned that one the hard way too. Instead we bow down to and try to appease the liberals. Fuck the liberals. Sometimes, being a pussy isn't an option...
It does not matter what laws the government passes. Most Americans will fight to the death before they surrender anything as precious as our gun rights!!!
ReplyDeleteDoug
Doug, that might be the case in soemthing as draconian as confiscation, but, if I remember correctly we all just kind of sat around while billy clinton passed the assault weapons ban back in 1994.
DeleteI don't think it would be very difficult for the government to do something just as bad or worse. Most people in this Country won't fight for anything anymore.
