Take a good look around...

Stop for a minute. Look around. Really look. Can you see it? Can you feel the tension in the air? Right underneath the surface is that sound like a rubber band being stretched just a little too far. It's subtle and if you aren't paying attention you might miss it.

Something is happening in this Country and most of us aren't going to like it. There are all these little hints about upcoming gun bans and tax hikes and regulations for this and that. All the talk of the fiscal cliff and unfunded liabilities. On and on. Do you know that our national debt is working on SEVENTEEN TRILLION DOLLARS? Yep, that's TRILLION with a T.

Do you know that there is at least that much more debt that isn't even talked about in un or under funded federal pensions, social security shotfalls and medicare? We are on a path that ends in disaster no matter what these government stooges do with taxes. If they took every penny from all 330 million of us it wouldn't even make a dent. Every single one of the members of congress knows this. But still, they refuse to address the real issues. This is not sustainable. It isn't. No matter what, this house of cards is going to come tumbling down. And it won't be long now.

Are you doing anything to get ready for what's to come?

I've faced most of the fears in my life and come out the other side. So anymore, not much bothers me. But the one thing that keeps me awake some nights is the fear that when my family needs me most, I won't be prepared. It scares me more and more as I see the Country I love with all my heart headed toward a train wreck like we have never seen before. There are lots of people that feel exactly like I do. I try to do something everyday that lessens that fear. Even something as simple as thinking through a plan, checking it for flaws, is progress. I'm not a rich guy. I can't order up 5 years worth of freeze dried gourmet meals. Hell, I can't order up 6 months of the stuff. But every time we go to the grocery store, we pick up a little extra. Every time we empty a gallon jug it is washed and filled with water. We practice our shooting skills. We practice our fire making skills. Practice, practice, practice. I read constantly. I study up on skills I want to learn. I search for skills I might need but aren't aware of. And I always try to teach my Children about the Country our Founding Fathers wanted for us.

I know my girls probably get tired of hearing me preach about stuff. I don't blame them. If I were 18 or 14 again I would much rather be doing something else. But I'm hoping the skills they have acquired will help them in any situation, good or bad.

Ok, I'm starting to ramble. My point is this, if you haven't started preparing for a disaster, you should. If have started, where are you? Is it where you need to be?

It is your OBLIGATION to take care of your family. If you think when the next earthquake or tornado hits, the government will take care of you and yours, think again. Ask the people in the North East. Ask the people of the Gulf Coast. They will tell you how it really is. You will find out very fast that you are on your own. And then... it's too late to get ready, to prepare. Proactive, really, be it...

Go read the article that RRA Buddy pointed out below. It talks about the scary truth to our debt and deficit.

  1. 17 trillion might be the very tip of the iceberg if these two are to be believed.

And they seem to have the experience and background to know. The number in that article are just plain scary. Worse than Greece, here we come.

    1. Our numbers are so much bigger than what Greece experienced. And when we go down, holy crap, that crash is going to carry like an Indian Ocean tsunami. It's going to be ugly, for a long, long time. How is it that people don't see this shit coming?

  2. I worry most about losing our home. We are drawing down a big chunk of our 401K's in order to purchase a home way out in the boondocks, but a major increase in taxes or an economic crash could leave us unable to afford payments - just like the hundreds of thousands (millions?) who have lost jobs and are unable to make their mortgage payments. We have enough income right now to make ends meet, but that could change.

If it happens broadly across the nation - like the collapse of Social Security, or .Gov taking all of our pensions/401K funds - then I don't think anyone will be taking our home. But in the Depression, as widespread as unemployment and the loss of assets were, people did still lose their homes. So I worry. We are OK on preps, but if the local Sheriff's Dept attempts to evict us due to the above possibilities, it won't be pretty.

We are hoping that our local Sheriff will not participate in any gun confiscation or general home evictions if it comes to that, but I don't know that for a fact. We'll see, though, as I believe both could happen.

    1. I worry about that too. I am pretty confident that our local sheriff wouldn't participate in any stupid bullshit. He seems like a decent enough guy and runs a tight ship.
